CALA · Cámara Americana de Latinos Avanzando

Questions

What everyone asks before joining.

Do I have to be Latino to join?

No. Membership is open and voluntary, and cannot be denied on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, religion, sex, age or disability. It's written in the certificate of formation filed with the state. Our identity lives in the purpose, the language and the programming, not in an admission filter.

What if my Spanish isn't good?

You're welcome all the same. Spanish is our operating language, not an entry requirement. If your business wants to reach this market, you're in exactly the right place.

Are the dues deductible?

Business league dues are deductible as a business expense under section 162 of the federal tax code. We're not your accountant: confirm it with yours before filing.

Is CALA already a tax-exempt organization?

Not yet, and we'd rather tell you straight. CALA is incorporated with the State of Texas as a Domestic Nonprofit Corporation with a chamber of commerce and business league purpose. The federal 501(c)(6) exemption is requested from the IRS via Form 1024 once there is a roster, and that filing is pending. No dues are represented today as a deductible charitable donation — they are a business expense, which is a different thing.

What happens to my dues if the chamber doesn't take off?

Membership covers twelve months from payment —or, if you join in 2026, from the day you pay until December 31, 2027— and dues are non-refundable, as in any chamber. What you can do before paying is read our full bylaws, see who's on the board, and measure whether we deliver what we publish above. We'd rather you join measuring than join on enthusiasm.

Do the founders make money from this?

They receive no profits, dividends or surplus — it's prohibited in the bylaws and it's a condition of the legal structure. They can be paid for work actually performed, at market rate, under the written procedure of Article VI and without voting on their own contract.

The first ones write what this chamber will be.

Then two hundred will come, and then five hundred, and by then the rules will already be set. If your business is going to be here anyway, it's worth being here while it's still being decided.

Tell us what your business does and which level fits you. We'll reply with what's included, how payment works and when the next gathering is.
